RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy)

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, which is commonly referred to as RSD, is a horrible medical condition that can occur in an individual’s arms and hands. An individual with reflex sympathetic dystrophy or RSD often has burning pain, swelling, stiffness, and even discoloration in their arm or hand. This is a result of their sympathetic or unconscious nerve system having a disturbance that disrupts blood flow and affects sweat glands in the arm and hand. This disturbance often results in the nervous system becoming overactive, which causes the burning pain, stiffness, swelling, and discoloration most individuals with RSD or reflex sympathetic dystrophy feel. If RSD is left untreated, it can result in an individual losing use of the arm or hand that is affected.

In some instances, it is unknown what causes reflex sympathetic dystrophy. Often times however, it first appears in patients after they have had surgery. This may be the result of injuries to the nerve, which causes nerve impulses to change and often “short circuit.” Patients may be the victim of medical malpractice if a doctor’s error is the reason why the patient developed reflex sympathetic dystrophy.

For individuals who have developed reflex sympathetic dystrophy or RSD, early diagnosis and treatment is critical. The longer an individual experiences the symptoms of RSD without any treatment, the more permanent damage that may be caused by this condition.

If you as a patient have suffered reflex sympathetic dystrophy or RSD, you may be entitled to compensation through medical malpractice. If a doctor made an error during surgery or failed to properly diagnose and treat your RSD, they may have committed medical malpractice and could be at fault.

Failure of doctors to properly diagnose and provide treatment for RSD is also considered medical malpractice.
